The European Physical Journal E 25th Anniversary Collection: Past Insights, Present Voices, Future Horizons

Celebrating 25 years of the European Physical Journal E (EPJE)

From foundational insights in soft condensed matter to emerging frontiers in biological physics.

The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the European Physical Journal E (EPJE). Since its launch in 2000, EPJE has grown from a core focus on polymers, colloids, and complex fluids into a broad and dynamic platform for research in soft matter, flowing matter and biological physics. Over the past quarter-century, the journal has supported the evolution of key fields — from polymer rheology to active matter, from granular flows to biophysical modeling — while cultivating a diverse and interdisciplinary scientific community across Europe and worldwide.

To celebrate this milestone, EPJE is assembling a three-part Anniversary Collection — “EPJE 25th Anniversary Collection: Past Insights, Present Voices, Future Horizons”. This project will unfold throughout 2025, with final publication of the complete Anniversary Issue in 2026. The collection honors the scientific heritage of EPJE, showcases the journal’s evolution, and highlights the emerging directions shaping its future. This Collection will be edited by The EPJE Editors-in-Chief, Fabrizio Croccolo, Giovanna Fragneto and Holger Stark.

The collection includes:

    1. Landmark Papers Revisited, in which selected influential EPJE publications are reassessed through newly invited commentaries by leading researchers.
    2. Voices of the Editors, offering reflections from former Editors-in-Chief and editorial board members on the journal’s evolution and scientific identity, along with a forward-looking editorial by the current editorial team.
    3. Future Horizons, featuring contributions from emerging investigators who outline the scientific opportunities and challenges expected to shape the next decade of soft and flowing matter and biological physics.

Taken together, these essays celebrate the achievements of EPJE’s first 25 years and articulate a vision for the journal’s continuing role in fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

A Living Anniversary Collection (2025–2026)

Because of the scope of this initiative, the Anniversary Collection will be published incrementally during 2025, with contributions appearing as they are completed. The full Anniversary Issue will be finalized and published in 2026.

We invite the EPJE community — authors, reviewers, and readers — to join us in celebrating 25 years of discovery, innovation, and collaboration in soft matter and biological physics.

We are highly delighted by the quality of the proof. This is exceptional compared to all other journals we have published in until now. Thank you!
